A few moments worth sharing from our first week in Uganda: finding a snake on our front porch, being called Mzungus (white people) and getting stared at everywhere we go, and standing on the equator.

On Monday evening we returned to the school in Kibaale from Masaka, where we will be spending some of our weekends. When we got to the school, there was a large group of people applying to get their children enrolled in the school to fill the few extra spots they have this year. As we were settling inside, we noticed a few young girls standing at our door and poking their heads inside to watch us. We waved and greeted them and then turned back to our own conversation. A few moments later, we turned around again to see that they had made their way inside and were now sitting on our couch! We tried to make conversation with them and ask questions, but unfortunately they spoke very little English. So instead we brought them outside and walked them back to the crowd of people. When we turned to leave them, they, along with a whole bunch of other kids, started following us back to our place. Jeff and Shannon suggested that we bring out some skipping ropes and soccer balls to play with and those were a big hit; soon, we had a big group of kids playing in our yard!

Some of the kids don’t see Mzungus very often, if ever, and were very curious about our white skin and how it feels. One of the girls slowly shuffled over to me until she was right up beside me and then gently stroked my arm; when she saw that I had noticed her there she quickly backed away looking quite sheepish!
